The Apostles Creed
We are beginning a new study on the Apostles’ Creed looking at this ancient statement of faith and what it teaches us about the gospel. We will be using Our Creed: For Every Culture and For Ever Generation by Mark Johnston.
We will be looking at chapter 4, ‘He descended into Hell’. This should be a good lesson! me
The Heidelberg Catechism
Question 44. Why does the creed add, “He descended to hell”?
A. To assure me during attacks of deepest dread and temptation that Christ my Lord, by suffering unspeakable anguish, pain, and terror of soul, on the cross but also earlier, has delivered me from hellish anguish and torment.
The Westminster Larger Catechism
Question 50. Wherein consisted Christ’s humiliation after his death?
A. Christ’s humiliation after his death consisted in his being buried, and continuing in the state of the dead, and under the power of death till the third day; which hath been otherwise expressed in these words, He descended into hell.
